Valley Gatherings is an upcoming wedding and events venue located on a Century Farm. It is in the Driftless region of Vernon County on the Kickapoo River. In the late 1980’s the owner graduated from Viterbo University and started her 30 year teaching career. She moved into the old farm house that her grandparents built which originally was a granary and chicken coop combined. During her years living on the farmstead, she completely remodeled the house on the small dairy farm and raised heifers as a side hobby. She received her most enjoyment from gardening. Each year she would add more perennial beds and later a pond. In October of 2008, at the age of 45, she married for the first time. Shortly after being married, the two of them built their new home. Working together they created, maintained and continually added to the landscape as it is presently.
It was an honor working on this project. I learned new information about the area and new skills as well. The Kickapoo River Valley is one of the oldest river systems in the world. Because the glaciers missed what is now called the Driftless Area, the Kickapoo River was not affected and did not change its natural course. Rising some 350 feet above the river are the Ocooch Mountains, named for a group of indigenous people who once made the hills their home. The owner does a great job maintaining her landscape and it is a very peaceful, relaxing place that you would have to see in person to fully experience. This project was an opportunity to refresh my HTML/CSS skills, and learn how to navigate a drone. It was a lot of fun taking photos, videos and navigating the drone around the farm. Working on this project, I learned an important lesson. Sometimes we need to put the electronics away and step outside to realize what is most important, the people in your life and amazing places like this.
